The Ministry of Agriculture is expanding activities across the country in dealing with the present weather condition in order to maximize resources and minimise loss.Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud stated that several interventions are ongoing and present measures being employed can dictate long-term increased opportunities for the agriculture sector including agro-processing and increased access to market. The minister was speaking at the Guyana Agricultural Producer Association´s El Nino forum to discuss its effects on non-traditional farmers and their livelihood.Minister Persaud disclosed that the agro-processing facility being constructed at the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) will reduce the amount of crop spoilage experienced by farmers. The minister highlighted the comprehensive diversification programme which has commenced and aims to venture beyond the traditional crop sectors into uncharted territories. We are examining those areas which would yield the earliest returns and so agriculture is undergoing a revolution to take advantage of the diversification programme.Minister Persaud stressed that the ministry is also working on developing the sector to deal with extreme climate challenges such as El Nino.He disclosed that discussions are in train to clear dense backlands for cultivation purposes so as to ensure the productivity of farmers.Already Guyana is seeing an influx of investors from Aruba and Trinidad and Tobago who are attempting to source a number of local items for export. The Agriculture Minister declared that the sector must be developed to respond to such a request especially with regards to linking farmers to markets. He urged farmers to get registered so that the ministry would have a clear picture of the number of farmers, their location, produce type and quantity. The minister said this would be made much easier with the sourcing of the fibre optic cable from Brazil which would allow farmers to connect directly to external investors and source overseas markets. With the Production Forecasting Information System every single farmer can be found and we want them to benefit from the external interest in our local crops. Our farmers can also learn about techniques used in other countries. We want to make you 21st century farmers but you must reduce your skepticism about technology, Minister Persaud said.He pointed out that Guyana has since developed its own breed of sheep using the genetic breeding technique and is at present venturing into breeding through artificial insemination.Minister Persaud added that farmers must commit to making things happen instead of dwelling only on Guyana?s potentials and possibilities.
